#52 Again, In Detention

Summary: Hogwarts Headmistress Minerva McGonagall has got to be kidding when she declared a week-long detention for Head Boyship rivals Do Kyungsoo and Kim Junmyeon. But she's not.
Pairing: Suho/Kyungsoo
Rating: PG-15
Word count: 8,319 words
Disclaimers (if any): My UST and make out scenes suck. Sorry.
Author's note: I had to be reminded that there can't be two Head Boys per year in Hogwarts. Opposite to what the prompt said, I had to make them two prefects instead, aiming to become the next Head Boy. Dear Prompter, I hope I did your prompt justice although I know I still lack a lot. Off to Hogwarts we go!
DO KYUNGSOO OF the just and fair house of Hufflepuff is proud to say that he is perfectly perfect, thank you very much. He is not the sort of student that you will catch out of bed after hours or who will stray within five yards of the Forbidden Forest except during Care of Magical Creatures class. Of course, he has the school rules memorized back to front, even with his eyes closed. In fact, he has never ever been in detention in all the six years he has studied at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Naturally, he is the prefect of his house and in running to become the next Head Boy.
According to the Sorting Hat in his first year, he has all the qualities that the legendary Helga Hufflepuff favors for her students. He is dedicated and hardworking, patient, kind, tolerant, loyal, and fair. The Perfect Hufflepuff as Professor Pomona Sprout calls him. Moreover, he is an achiever: top student, always with the highest scores in every exam, and has mastered a lot of spells that even his seniors cannot do. Even most Ravenclaws, who are clever by definition, cannot be at par with his intelligence.
Meanwhile, there’s this Slytherin boy that rivals Do Kyungsoo. Kim Junmyeon is the exact reflection of Do Kyungsoo, except that he is not a Hufflepuff. The Perfect Slytherin, he’s got all it takes to belong to the house of snakes--cunning, resourceful, and no doubt ambitious. It is rumored around the school the he wishes to become the next Minister for Magic--he definitely has connections, courtesy of his wealthy family--so it’s not very unlikely. In fact, he is also very likely to become the next Head Boy apart from Kyungsoo after he has been selected as a prefect for his house.
As they say, there can never be two tigers in one mountain so these two are always against each other in their battle to reach the summit. There had been a lot of times when they share the same class and each time that happens, they both try to outstrip each other’s achievement. It came to a point that their classmates are no longer trying; they became more interested in betting who will win and who will get the higher score. In cases where they are not in the same class, the two intelligent forces will still do all they can to exceed the achievement of the other that the teacher in charge gets flustered and exhausted with all of it. It is no longer a healthy competition between two top students but rather a toxic war of wit and talent for five years.
This year, it’s supposed to be the end of their long rivalry since the one who gets to be chosen as Head Boy definitely wins.
KIM JUNMYEON HAS competed with Do Kyungsoo all his life since he started at Hogwarts and since this is their sixth year, he wants to make peace with the Hufflepuff boy. Enough rivalry is enough.
He is sincere with his intentions. He is not a bad guy, just like how Slytherins are frequently described. Honestly, he didn't want to rival Kyungsoo. He just wanted to co-exist peacefully--two intelligent minds honing themselves to be great wizards--but it's the people around them who made a great deal about it. With all the pressure it brought him, Junmyeon began trying to outdo Kyungsoo. Now, he wants things to be right and he wants to offer friendship with the Hufflepuff boy.
So one day, he approached him in the library. As always, Kyungsoo is reading an hour before bed. The titles he reads are advanced ones and being the top student he is, he is a regular at the Restricted Section where all the most fascinating yet dangerous books lie asleep in their shelves. Junmyeon reads a lot too, that's how he observed Kyungsoo's routine, and he's pretty much a mainstay at the Restricted Section too but he prefers the opposite end of where Kyungsoo is.
This time, he changed course and intentionally wandered near Kyungsoo's side of the shelves.
"Hi," Junmyeon said, trying to sound casual. They rarely talked, averaging twice per term, so this is really very awkward for him.
Kyungsoo looks permanently bewildered with his wide, white-rich eyes and he looked even more surprised that Junmyeon strikes a conversation with him in the secluded part of the library.
"Why?" Kyungsoo asked with a hint of an caution.
"Why? You're asking me why?" Junmyeon said, and now he is bewildered. "I just want to talk, that's all."
"Why?" Kyungsoo asked again.
Junmyeon was lost for words. Why? "I don't know," he shrugged. "Just...I just want to. Can't we talk?"
"Why does it feel like you've got something under your sleeves? What are you planning?"
Junmyeon backed away, hands up. "Nothing! I just wanted to talk! Why are you so tensed anyway?"
Kyungsoo crossed his arms. "Because," he said with emphasis, "you bring bad vibes around and you talking to me out of the blue is very suspicious. Are you perhaps trying to take points off me?"
Of course, the matter of house point is a big deal for Kyungsoo, but then, "I thought you have the school rules memorized back to front?" Junmyeon questioned. "Prefects can't take points off each other," he pointed out.
"Technically you can't do that, yes," Kyungsoo acknowledged. "But if you're planning to lure me into trouble, McGonagall can take away my points. So stop what's cooking inside your big head because I'm not losing points for you."
Junmyeon had to agree he's right. Of course he can take points off Kyungsoo by making McGonagall take it from him. He hadn't thought of that. But then, that wasn't his intent when he began this conversation.
"I just wanted to talk and maybe... be friends?" Junmyeon said in frustration. "I'm not trying to get you into trouble!"
"Oh, really?" Kyungsoo said sarcastically. "I find that hard to believe in, seeing how you always try to rival what I can do."
"Can you not relax a little bit about that rivalry thing?" Junmyeon asked incredulously, his tone of voice rising. "Is that all that matters to you? And here I thought Hufflepuffs are kind and fair to everyone."
"I basically am kind and fair to everyone except you," Kyungsoo said spitefully.
"Oh wow!" Junmyeon laughed without humor, his temper fast rising. "I'm trying to reach out and end all this bullshit of a competition, being kind and all, but this is what I get! Wow!"
By definition, Kim Junmyeon has a big, kind heart. Yet, this conversation with Do Kyungsoo got derailed and is now getting out of hand. "No sense trying then," Junmyeon said finally. "Goodbye."
He stomped out the Restricted Section and out of the library just so he could breathe properly. He is so annoyed beyond description.
To his surprise, Kyungsoo followed after him, effortly cradling all his heavy books and bag in his haste to come out. "What's your problem?" Kyungsoo asked angrily. "You are being pointless! You don't storm off like that on me!"
"Why, are you like the Headmaster of this school? The Minister for Magic? How important do you think you are? You've got such a big head!"
"Wanna see how big this head could go?" Kyungsoo challenged, grabbing his wand inside his cloak pocket.
Junmyeon instinctively grabbed his too but none of them dared to pull out his wand as they sized each other up. Kyungsoo let his things fall to the floor at his feet and they circled each other slowly.
"This is what you want?" Junmyeon said with a growl. "You want to prove you're the better wizard, don't you? Give it a shot then and show me."
The corridor outside the library was deserted since it was already so late at night. This gave Junmyeon the confidence that no one could see them even if they end up duelling each other. But he's not going to start it--he's not stupid. Let's see then how stupidly angry Kyungsoo can get.
As it turns out, Kyungsoo has very short temper and he pulled out his wand. Instinctively, Junmyeon brandished his wand too and they fired spells at the same time--Junmyeon a Jelly Legs jinx and Kyungsoo a Tarantallegra.
Kyungsoo melted to the floor with his wobbly legs the instant the jinx hit him. Junmyeon, on the other hand, had his legs jerking in uncontrollable motion which made him fall to the ground.
Just then, other Prefects Park Chanyeol of Gryffindor House and Oh Sehun of Ravenclaw entered the scene. "HEY!" Chanyeol boomed in his deep voice.
Sehun waved his wand and both Kyungsoo's and Junmyeon's legs were cleared of spells. "What the hell are you two think doing?" he said in agitation. "You! Of all people..."
Junmyeon hated hearing those words. Of all people, it had to be you.
"Get up, you two," Chanyeol said aggressively. "Sehun and I can't take off points and give you detention but let's see what Professor McGonagall can do."
"OF ALL PEOPLE it had to be you two," Minerva McGonagall the Headmistress reiterated. Her hair was down and she was in her nightgown, pacing back and forth behind the table of her office. "Of course it would be you two."
Kyungsoo would have wanted to dissolve into mist at how venomous McGonagall looked at him now. For the longest time, he knows she favors him. All the good deeds he did in the past, all the points he scored for the past five years, all the exams he aced, all of them gone now because of Junmyeon's doing. He knew something was up when the Slytherin approached him. And now here they are.
"Dueling in the corridors...And here I thought you both know the school rules! You're supposed to set the example to younger students--of course you had, after all these years of being excellent in your classes--but Prefects should never duel in the corridors only for the first years to talk about in the morning! How could you two let this happen?"
McGonagall's tirade was endless. Kyungsoo swears the moment Professor Sprout, his head of house, hears about this mess he was involved in would also be the time he clears his dormitory and leave Hogwarts out of shame. In fact, he should leave the moment the headmistress is done with them.
"Come on, professor, it wasn't as serious as setting a troll on him or--or anything that legendary Harry Potter did all those years ago!" Junmyeon appealed. "Besides, no one saw us!"
"Really now, Mr. Kim?" McGonagall snapped at him. "Now you just made matters worse for talking back at me like that! Besides, Potter's many mischief at school is a special case. The late Professor Albus Dumbledore was very tolerant but I would be pleased to inform you that I am not."
Kyungsoo mentally slapped his forehead at Junmyeon's stupidity.
"I don't have to explain to your big brain that this is serious because you two are prefects!" said McGonagall. "Now, I'll be informing your Heads of Houses. You will meet me tomorrow evening here for your week-long detention."
Detention. Detention. Detention. A week-long detention.
The word reverberated in his ear. What will his parents say? What will the other teachers and the students say? They will be talk of the whole school for a week, oh my Merlin! Kyungsoo almost fainted in his seat.
AS IF MCGONAGALL'S rants had not been enough, Junmyeon was summoned once again into a professor's office, this time Professor Horace Slughorn's, his Head of the House. Junmyeon totally thinks these teachers are overreacting.
"Professor, we only did magic in the corridors, it wasn't even that big of a deal!"
"Do you seriously think so, Mr. Kim?" the round wizard asked. "Well, I clearly don't. You know well that what you did is a violation of school rules. Plus I heard you talked back at the Headmistress!"
After the longest fifteen minutes at Professor Slughorn's office, he was instructed to go to the Headmistress's office for his detention. Seriously, he's getting detention for something utterly nonsense.
Kyungsoo was waiting at the foot of the griffin statue that conceals the entrance, his big eyes red and swollen, perhaps from crying all night long. Talk about over-acting.
"Damn you!" As soon as Kyungsoo spotted Junmyeon, he raised his wand. "You tarnished my clean record! How dare you! Fuck you!"
"Too bad your curses do nothing even if you wave your wand. You just look stupid doing that," Junmyeon sneered, pissed at everything.
Kyungsoo lowered his wand. "Of course I'm not getting any more detention for a Squib like you."
"Squib?" Junmyeon's temper shot up instantly at that; he doesn't like people belittling him like that, given his real blood status. "May I remind you that I, Kim Junmyeon, of the noble House of Salazar Slytherin, is a pureblood! My blood is purer than yours could ever be, excuse me, you Muggleborn!" (But of course he doesn't call people Mudblood; that's bad.)
Kyungsoo stuttered into silence because of course, he is a Muggleborn. That is why he was so keen on getting to the top, to prove that blood status as noble as Junmyeon's means nothing. But hey, Junmyeon is his rival and that must mean something about being great wizards...
Just then, the griffin statue set to motion, spiralling upwards and revealing a staircase. Few seconds later, McGonagall descended from the steps.
"Follow me. You're going to re-write detention records for Mr. Filch."
She introduced the two students to Argus Filch, who they had never actually talked to given their clean detention records. The aged caretaker showed them four boxes of detention records that they had to re-write and just looking at the box, Junmyeon thinks he’d rather sleep. It’s simply impossible to finish within one week (not that he’s asking for an extension).
“Even the legendary Harry Potter had been here, re-writing these records, but because of the war, he was never able to finish,” Filch explained with a sneer. His cat, Mrs. Norris, made a show of scratching at the side of the box that left shallow claw marks on it. “Come to think of it, you are going to continue what the Potter boy has started years ago. You must be so honored.”
“Can you just shut up about it?” McGonagall said irritably. “Well then, I’ll leave you boys here.”
As soon as the Headmistress was out of earshot, the caretaker continued. “Given my way, I would totally bring back the old punishments of hanging you by the wrist with these chains.” He gestured towards yet another box containing said chains. “They’re always in good condition even though they’re as old as I am.”
Junmyeon smirked. “I suppose while you can’t do that to the students, you can try hanging your cat by the neck for the meantime,” he said. “Leave us be so Kyungsoo and I can start.”
That shut the caretaker up. He picked up his cat and cradled her into his office. Kyungsoo, who looked shaken at the thought of hanging by his wrist with a thick chain now looked relieved.
THE POINTLESS PUNISHMENT made Kyungsoo think that maybe since the legendary Harry Potter--who violated a lot of school rules courtesy of the leeway that the late Professor Dumbledore gave him in lieu of defeating He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named all those years ago--had left the school, rule violations at Hogwarts became so lame that even a simple matter of magic in the corridors landed him into a nonsense week-long detention. Not that he minded; He writes long-ass essays for their homeworks and he’s not the type to back off a task like this. He’s pretty sure he can manage. After all, Hufflepuffs are known for their hard-work.
The two of them divided the box evenly and began work. After about a dozen cards, Junmyeon was already complaining of his painful hand but Kyungsoo write on. They said that any task won’t be as difficult if you love what you’re doing. Not that he likes rewriting records for detention but he’s starting to look at it in a positive way; doing this for detention is like walking down memory lane. The past Hogwarts students and their misdeeds, spread out in front of his eyes. Reading their now historical records should be fun.
“Oh, here’s Harry Potter’s all record,” Junmyeon suddenly said. “Apparently he cursed one Draco Malfoy, landing him in the same detention as we are now.”
“Is he supposed to be the son of Lucius Malfoy, the old Death Eater who got vindicated?” Kyungsoo asked, snatching the record to look carefully. He read a lot about the Battle of Hogwarts so he’s pretty familiar with the names that fought on both sides. The Malfoys were Death Eaters except for the wife, Narcissa. They walked out on He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named later in the battle that’s why they got vindicated.
“Yeah,” Junmyeon said simply. It seems he has read all about it too.
“Wait, are we supposed to be talking?” Kyungsoo said. “Why are you talking to me? Mind your own business!”
Junmyeon laughed. “Come on, Kyungsoo. There’s no point rivaling each other now that both our records are tainted.”
Kyungsoo fired up. “Because it’s your fault! I knew it--you were trying to lure me into trouble when you approached me! Too bad you got caught in your own trap!”
Junmyeon sighed. “Really now, Kyungsoo? How many times do I have to tell you, I have no intention of doing any of those things. I simply want to be friends, okay?”
Just then, the door to Filch’s office opened. “At the rate you two are talking, you are going to have to spend a total of two weeks here.”
Kyungsoo rolled his eyes at Junmyeon and resumed with his work. Filch retreated to his room.
Junmyeon spoke with a lower tone of voice. “Just remember that you were the first one to cast that jinx and I only counter-attacked.”
“Whatever, Junmyeon. I’m not listening to you anymore.”
“But really, Kyungsoo. Let’s stop this bullshit of a rivalry. For all we know, we can be good friends,” Junmyeon insisted. “What do you have to lose if you agreed to be friends with me? For all we know, we can be better if we start working together.”
“You only want a share of my achievements. Go make you own and I’ll make mine.”
“Fine. But we don’t have to compete for everything.”
“I’m not competing with you. Only, I am so good at what I’m doing, I’m constantly beating you.”
“Well, if you’re not competing with me, then you won’t have reasons to beat me.”
“I’m still better than you at everything.”
“Such a humble Hufflepuff we got here,” Junmyeon sneered.
Kyungsoo glared daggers at the other boy and continued writing.
AS THE DETENTION goes on for a week, Junmyeon had to return to Filch’s office every day after class to meet Kyungsoo and resume rewriting records. They had been on it for three days already, writing from seven until midnight, and Junmyeon has long since given up trying to be friends with Kyungsoo and opted instead to work in silence although from time to time they would bicker at each other.
“How can you write so illegibly like that!” Kyungsoo snapped. “You’ll going to have to rewrite all those again, I’m telling you.”
Unconsciously, Junmyeon smiled at Kyungsoo’s angry face. He’s getting so used to it by now that he’s looking handsome when he’s angry…
“McGonagall didn’t say anything about writing legibly. Besides, I’m tired. My hands are going to fall off soon.”
That made Kyungsoo look more annoyed and Junmyeon smiled wider.
“Come on, why don’t we take a rest for like five minutes? We’ve been on it for an hour already.”
“It’s only been an hour,” Kyungsoo said. “You’re so damn lazy. If you had been sorted into Hufflepuff back in our first year, the door to the common room wouldn’t have let you in even if you blast it open. ‘Hufflepuffs are unafraid of toil…’”
“Who says I want to be in your house?” Junmyeon asked. “Slytherin House is the noblest of the four Hogwarts Houses. If I were sorted into Hufflepuff, I would drop out of school right after the Sorting Ceremony and perhaps attend Beauxbatons instead.”
“Then go to fucking Beauxbatons if that’s what you want.”
“But I’m in Slytherin.”
“Yeah, and you’re an idiot for a Slytherin.”
“Oh no, I’m actually very suited to be in Slytherin. They don’t call me the perfect Slytherin for nothing.”
“You--” Kyungsoo protested but Junmyeon cut across him-- “Likewise, they say you are the perfect Hufflepuff and I definitely agree, seeing how industrious you are.”
Kyungsoo just glared, disbelieving that a praise just came out of Junmyeon’s mouth for him.
“I just hope you start being fair and kind to me too since we’ve been spending a lot of nights together with this stupid detention.”
Kyungsoo just rolled his big eyes.
TO BE HONEST, Kyungsoo’s feelings towards Junmyeon is starting to get warm at day two of detention but he doesn’t want to let his guard down. He realized that Junmyeon is a nice person after all, but that’s only judging from the times they’ve spent together in Filch’s office. He still has no idea what Junmyeon is like in his dormitory or anywhere else. They’ve shared classes but after all these years, Kyungsoo is under the impression that Junmyeon is only acting nice in front of the teachers to earn their favor.
And to be very honest, he has started to look forward to detention. Somehow, it’s a nice break from burying himself in tons of books--a change of scenery from the quiet library where he is alone, to the quiet but somewhat fun time with Junmyeon. From the class where he had to impress everyone to the calm detention where he can just do his thing and never compete with anyone.
Still, he likes bickering with Junmyeon. He gets impressed at Junmyeon’s comebacks when they argue sarcastically. He has to acknowledge that Junmyeon is really intelligent.
“Maybe being kind and nice to you… that could happen too.”
Junmyeon smiled a megawatts smile at that and Kyungsoo found himself blushing. “I mean, if you stop being such a jerk!” he amended with fake annoyance though deep inside he’s mentally reprimanding himself from speaking so thoughtlessly.
“Whatever,” Junmyeon said. “You said that already. I’m not being a jerk; there’s no hidden motive to my kindness towards you because I really want to put an end to this stupid so-called rivalry and just be friends.”
They quietly resumed writing after that and spoke very rarely until midnight. For the first time, however, Junmyeon bade him good night.
“Right,” Kyungsoo replied doubtfully. “See you tomorrow, I guess?”
Indeed, they saw each other again the following day. When Kyungsoo got up early to go to the Great Hall for breakfast, he came across Junmyeon as he ascended the stairs leading to their dungeon common room. Kyungsoo would’ve wanted to hide but Junmyeon already saw him and smiled at him. “Had a good night’s sleep?”
He couldn’t sleep the previous night, to tell the truth, but he just replied a hurried “Yeah!” hoping it would cut the conversation short. But Junmyeon went on, “I hope there’s pancakes today; I’m really craving for it right now.” He walked slower to match with Kyungsoo’s strides.
The students who were also coming down for breakfast began whispering among themselves because how can the two tigers walk together for breakfast? That was a sight to behold--something they had never seen before. It definitely has to go on the front page of the Daily Prophet--a very rare phenomenon has just occured. Kyungsoo wanted nothing but to get away from Junmyeon, who seemed to be oblivious to all the attention they are getting.
As soon as they reached the doorway of the Great Hall, Kyungsoo ran off to the Hufflepuff table without saying good bye. It was a relief that Ravenclaw table was set in between Hufflepuff and Slytherin tables. Kyungsoo sat facing the Slytherin table anyway.
“Yo.” Kim Jongdae, Kyungsoo’s fellow Hufflepuff, greeted. “What’s up?”
“Huh? Nothing,” Kyungsoo replied absent-mindedly, staring into space.
“What’s in the Slytherin table?” Jongdae asked, following Kyungsoo’s line of vision.
That startled Kyungsoo so he said a hurried “Nothing!” before he looked down at the food laid out in front of him. There were fruits and cereals and sausages--and then there was a small pile of pancakes. That made Kyungsoo look up to the Slytherin table again, only to find Junmyeon wolfing down a piece, making the maple syrup smudge the corner of his lips.
“So, how’s the detention going?” Jongdae asked, filling his plate with buttered toast and eggs and pouring himself a glass of milk. “Is Junmyeon being mean to you?”
Kyungsoo hastily turned his attention back to the fruits. “No, it’s okay…”
Jongdae made a sarcastic twitch of his curly lips before resuming attack on the toast. “I thought he’s very arrogant.”
“Not at all. He’s pretty kind,” Kyungsoo explained. “I mean…” but he doesn’t really know what made him say that. “Yeah…”
“Why, are you friends now?” Jongdae asked incredulously. “Do tell me that’s not gonna happen, ever,” he said, “otherwise, set me on fire already.”
Kyungsoo gave a nervous laugh, “Uh, no, not friends. We only just happen to serve the same punishment together.”
He looked up again and caught Junmyeon looking at him. Upon noticing him, Junmyeon made a huge wave of his hand and made a thumbs up over the pancakes. It was kind of awkward but Kyungsoo smiled in spite of himself.
“So… what’s with the thumbs up?”
Kyungsoo glared at Jongdae but deep inside thought he could make use of a Time Turner to speed up the day and meet Junmyeon again in detention.
“YOU KNOW WHAT, why don’t we make this detention more fun?” Junmyeon suggested. It was the sixth day of detention.
Kyungsoo looked up from the card he was rewriting. “You’re being lazy again.”
“I’m not!” Junmyeon said, showing how he’s halfway through his second box. Kyungsoo was already almost done with his. “Look, why don’t you tell me things about yourself and I’ll tell you about me?”
Kyungsoo frowned. “What do you care about me? And do you actually think I care about you?”
Junmyeon thought Kyungsoo really is a hard-headed, spoiled kid. But then he added, “Fine. Shouldn’t you start first because I don’t know what to say.”
Now that’s a good sign. “Um… I am born from a pureblood family, all of whom had been in Slytherin. I am the youngest in the clan and the last to attend Hogwarts.”
Kyungsoo nodded slowly. “That’s pretty interesting,” he admitted. “Well, my father is an architect and my mother is a curator in the Muggle world.”
“Now that’s more interesting! What’s an arkipeck?” Junmyeon asked.
Kyungsoo couldn’t help but burst out laughing at him. “Ar-chi-tect,” he enunciated slowly and clearly. “He designs buildings and houses. He works in a large firm and he’s pretty high up in ranks there because he’s been in it for twenty years already.”
“Wow,” Junmyeon said, legitimately fascinated. “This is the first time I’m hearing a work that is dedicated to designing a house… What about a cure-reaper? Some kind of healer?” He was totally curious.
Kyungsoo raised his thick eyebrows. “Healer?”
“You said she’s a cure-reaper?”
Kyungsoo laughed openly at that. “Curator! Anyway, why don’t you tell me about your parents’ work first and I’ll tell you mine?”
“Well, you know them. My dad is a staff of the Minister and he’s pretty high up there too like your dad while my mom works for Gringotts.”
“Ehh. That’s pretty lame,” Kyungsoo commented, joking.
“How could you!” Junmyeon protested, chuckling. “My dad is one of the Minister’s most trusted and my mom is a curse-breaker for the wizard bank, how is that lame?”
“Just kidding,” Kyungsoo chuckled. “Well, a cu-ra-tor works in a Muggle museum. She plans how the paintings in an exhibit will be laid out and manages the museum.”
“Now that’s lame,” Junmyeon said. “I heard Muggle paintings don’t move. Muggle exhibits are lame.”
“Paintings that move are scary. Besides, my mom once curated an augmented reality exhibit,” Kyungsoo explained. “When you point your phone on a photo, it will move and talk what it is all about.”
“Phone? Is that like the Muggle wand?”
“You should seriously consider attending Muggle Studies,” Kyungsoo said.
“What do I need that for?” Junmyeon said. “You can tell me all about them.”
Kyungsoo blinked at Junmyeon. “Uh, yes?”
Junmyeon smiled way too widely at that. He said yes. “So. What do you usually do when you’re in the Muggle world?”
“Well, aside from advance reading, I watch movies… go shopping at the mall…”
“That sounds cool,” Junmyeon said. “What’s a movie?”
“That’s like the photos that move but it tells a story,” Kyungsoo explained. “You know what, why don’t we watch movies in summer?”
Junmyeon hesitated. “Well, maybe that would be fun but I’m not sure what my parents would say. I don’t usually stray in the Muggle world, you see.”
“Eh, it’s okay since you’ll be with me.”
Wow, Junmyeon had never been so excited for summer to come. Usually he enjoys his stays at Hogwarts but a promise of meeting Kyungsoo outside made him look forward to the day they will watch movies, whatever that is.
KYUNGSOO TURNED OVER in his bed for the umpteenth time. He just asked Junmyeon for a movie. In Muggle language, that’s like asking someone out. Kyungsoo blushed violently then but Junmyeon doesn’t know that, right? Wizard dating is like going to the Three Broomsticks or Madame Pudifoot’s for coffee or watching wizard theatre plays or Quidditch matches together or walking down Diagon Alley to shop. Junmyeon has no idea about Muggle dating right?
He turned over in his bed again. Why did he even say that? Junmyeon simply looks pathetic not even knowing what a movie is and just as Kyungsoo was fascinated when he discovered the wizarding world, he thinks Junmyeon would be interested too, to know what the Muggle world is like.
“He’s really stupid. Doesn’t even know what a movie is,” he said out loud, pulling his blanket up to his chin agressively.
“What’s a movie?” Jongdae asked groggily.
Kyungsoo almost jumped out of bed in surprise. “Nothing, Jongdae, just go back to sleep!”
“Who doesn’t know what a movie is?”
“You don’t. Now don’t mind me here.”
“You’re so noisy!” Jongdae complained. “Your bed is creaking a lot when you’re rolling on it, do you know that?”
“Aish. I won’t roll over again, okay?”
Suddenly, Jongdae sat up. “What’s bothering you?” he asked.
“Nothing. Why would I bother with anything?”
Jongdae raised an eyebrow. “Does ‘nothing’ refer to a certain young wizard called Kim Junmyeon?”
That had Kyungsoo panicking. “No! I’m telling you, it’s not him! Why would I bother about him?”
Jongdae laughed. “Okay,” he said in a sing-song voice, lying back down in bed.
Kyungsoo was glad Jongdae didn’t push the subject. He turned his back on his roommate and imagined the contents of his closet back at home, wondering what he should wear for the movie night.
IT WAS THE final day of detention and Junmyeon was a little downcast it would end. Seven days had passed by so fast and although he didn’t like getting in detention for something as petty as magic in the corridors at first, now he doesn’t want for the detention to stop.
This is the only chance he could talk to Kyungsoo.
Even though Kyungsoo still treats him coldly from time to time, Junmyeon knows that deep inside, Kyungsoo has started relaxing around him a little bit. It’s not much but it’s an improvement. Kyungsoo can talk about Muggle living now and listens to Junmyeon’s stories about his travels to various wizarding places with his parents. Kyungsoo, after all, is truly the Perfect Hufflepuff; though he tried to mask it, his natural kindness shows.
“Does McGonagall realize that since we’ve started detention last week, we’ve neglected prefect duties?” Junmyeon said ten minutes into their new session. “I know the Headmistress is a brilliant witch but you know…”
“Wow. I never knew the day will come when you’ll say something against your favorite professor,” Kyungsoo sniggered, scribbling away on the detention records.
“I only meant-- That-- Don’t you think I’m right? I mean, look at it logically. I’m only curious about what you think.”
“Maybe he thinks that fifth year prefects could take over at the moment,” Kyungsoo said fairly. “There are six prefects per House and the school pretty much can survive with only five prefects each from Hufflepuff and Slytherin for a week.”
Junmyeon nodded. “Well, yeah.” He sighed heavily.
“Why, don’t you enjoy detention with me?”
Junmyeon blushed. Kyungsoo is really asking him this? Yes, more than you know. “Uh, yeah.”
“I sort of like it too,” Kyungsoo admitted.
“After this, will you still hang out with me?” Junmyeon asked rashly.
“We’re supposed to watch movies in summer, right?”
“Oh, yeah.”
“I mean, not only in summer but also, like, in between classes or during lunch or dinner or weekends, you know? Study together or patrol at night together…?”
“Huh? Uh… sure.”
Junmyeon glowed with happiness and scribbled away more energetically. Kyungsoo just said ‘sure,’ a major shift from ‘do you think I care’ statements he had in the past. Maybe they are friends now, Kyungsoo just doesn’t want to admit it.
“There. I’m done,” Kyungsoo said, two hours later. Just then, Junmyeon finished too. “Wow, finally we’re done.”
“Right. And it’s only nine in the evening. An hour more to go before patrol duties.”
Kyungsoo looked as if he wanted to say something but hesitated. Junmyeon waited until finally, Kyungsoo spoke. “Would you like to eat something?”
“What? The dinner ended ages ago,” Junmyeon replied.
“I know but… I also know how to get food directly from the kitchen,” Kyungsoo admitted.
“Oh,” Junmyeon nodded, suspicious. “I know Hufflepuffs would have greater chance of knowing how to do that, since Helga Hufflepuff herself was known as the inventor of many Hogwarts dishes back then, but going to the kitchen… isn’t that supposed to be against the rules?”
Kyungsoo laughed and his lips formed a heart shape around his white teeth, accompanied with a “Hee hee.”
Junmyeon was sure that was the first time Kyungsoo ever did that and boy does he look so adorable! He almost got a heart attack. It definitely tugged a smile on his own lips.
“I know,” Kyungsoo admitted. “So it’s a secret, okay? Besides, now that I’ve experienced detention with you, I realized it isn’t so bad after all,” he explained. “Just some kind of celebration now that we’re done.”
So they ventured down to the corridor where the entrance to the kitchen is supposed to be concealed. It was lined with huge paintings of different food: roast turkey on this one and salad on the next. But Kyungsoo chose a painting of fruit baskets and tickled the huge pear where a doorknob should be. The painting swung forward to admit them.
“Welcome to the kitchen!”
The Hogwarts house elves swarmed around them, waist-level high and all curtsying and beaming widely. Each one scampered to get a plate of food to offer them.
“Merlin’s pants, this is amazing!” Junmyeon exclaimed, picking a muffin from a tiny female elf.
Meanwhile, Kyungsoo was already munching on an apple. “I know right,” he said with yet another heart-shaped smile. “Congratulations on finishing the detention!”
“The pointless detention, I might add,” Junmyeon said, claiming a bottle of butterbeer from another elf. “Congrats!”
The house elves cheered with them though Junmyeon was sure they don’t fully understand what they are celebrating about. They jostled around them, bringing both Kyungsoo and Junmyeon closer together on the center of their little party--the closest they’ve ever been to each other. Junmyeon’s heart raced inside his chest as he stared into Kyungsoo’s eyes, wondering what it would feel like to bring their faces closer and perhaps share a little kiss…
KYUNGSOO WAS SURPRISED when somebody dropped right next to him on the Hufflepuff table during breakfast the following day. He was nervous this would happen ever since he woke up that morning and remembered what he agreed to the night before. It was an inexplicable mixture of excitement, worry and embarrassment but he has to admit he’s been pretty expectant as soon as he entered the Great Hall. He turned to face Junmyeon who was smiling so wide it hurt Kyungsoo’s chest.
“Hey.”
“Good morning!” Junmyeon said brightly. All around them, Hufflepuffs looked on curiously and whispered amongst themselves--Kim Junmyeon sat with Do Kyungsoo and Do Kyungsoo did not protest. “This has to be on the front page of the Daily Prophet,” one of them says audibly but Junmyeon ignored them all.
“So, what do you have on your sched this morning?” Kyungsoo asked nervously, trying not to sound awkward. “I’ve got Arithmancy.”
“I’ll be on Herbology,” Junmyeon replied. “Oh, we’re having Potions together after lunch, aren’t we? See you there!”
Junmyeon jogged back to the Slytherin House table and Kyungsoo was left to deal with the onlookers. He blinked and turned his attention back to his food as if nothing happened but really, he thinks they should really clear out now.
Unfortunately for him, Jongdae replaced the seat Junmyeon just vacated. “So,” Jongdae said.
“Shut up,” Kyungsoo said automatically, turning red.
Jongdae laughed. “Oh my god, Kyungsoo.”
“What?” Kyungsoo said defensively.
“I told you, just set me on fire already,” Jongdae sniggered.
“Yeah, maybe I should.”
Later that day, Jongdae went to Potions class together. When the Slytherins entered, Kyungsoo tried to step behind Jongdae and hide but Junmyeon came bounding towards him. “Hi Kyungsoo!”
Kyungsoo laughed nervously, internally panicking that everyone is watching them talk. He is under the impression that they are all teasing the two of them. “Hi.”
Jongdae chose that opportunity to shuffle sideways away from the two of them, departing with a cheshire cat smile.
“Is it alright to work next to you?” Junmyeon asked.
“Um, sure,” Kyungsoo said. If he would be truthful, he really wanted Junmyeon close by but he’s very embarrassed at the attention it is eliciting from the class.
When Professor Slughorn arrived, the first thing he announced to the class was the obvious fact that Kyungsoo’s and Junmyeon’s cauldrons are side by side. The class whooped eagerly altogether and Kyungsoo thought he’d burst into flames anytime soon.
“I’m glad you’re now friendly towards each other,” Slughorn noted. “Well then, Draught of Living Death…”
That night too, Junmyeon joined Kyungsoo during their patrol duties. While on it, they talked a lot and Kyungsoo was extremely comfortable again around Junmyeon. This surprised both Chanyeol and Sehun.
“How come you’re patrolling together?” Chanyeol demanded.
“Why? Is it wrong to patrol together?” Junmyeon asked innocently. “Anyway, you two always patrol together.”
“I mean, when we last saw you together, you were both writhing in the ground after cursing each other,” Chanyeol said, confused.
“Yeah. Aren’t you supposed to hate each other?” interjected Sehun.
Kyungsoo thought he’d explode but Junmyeon said coolly, “Come on. Aren’t you glad the detention turn us into good friends?”
Sehun shrugged. “Well, yeah. At least the detention did you good.”
Both Gryffindor and Ravenclaw prefects walked away at that and Kyungsoo was relieved.
“I don’t know why it’s such a big deal. I mean, yeah, we were enemies before but shouldn’t they be happy that finally we’ve made up?” Kyungsoo said nervously.
“Likewise, it shouldn’t be a big deal for you. Why are you so nervous anyway?” Junmyeon asked.
“Uh--no-nothing,” Kyungsoo stuttered.
“Ey, how cute!” Junmyeon said, leaning forward and pecking Kyungsoo’s lips with a tiny kiss.
Both of them froze; Junmyeon seemed to have acted out of impulse. “S-sorry!” Junmyeon said hastily. “I’m--you were so adorable I--”
Kyungsoo dashed towards the nearest bathroom in embarrassment, realizing a second too late that it was the prefect’s bathroom. Junmyeon ran after him.
Kyungsoo locked himself inside one of the cubicles, breathing heavily and touching his lips. “That did not happen,” he whispered to himself.
“Kyungsoo?” Junmyeon called.
Kyungsoo’s hands were shaking and he tried to ignore Junmyeon. But then a female voice joined his.
“He’s right there,” Moaning Myrtle said with her usual flirty tone. “He’s pretty shocked. What did you do?”
“Uh, nothing,” Junmyeon said. “You should--ah, go away, Myrtle. I think I passed by Peeves earlier in the corridor, writing bad stuff about you,” he said evasively. “He’s in the first floor bathroom. You should stop him.”
Kyungsoo heard Myrtle choke. “Oh--he is?” she asked, close to tears. “He shouldn’t--OHHHH,” she wailed loudly and dove into a toilet.
Kyungsoo got more nervous. He knows Junmyeon is about to ask him to come out. “Oh no, oh no, oh no!”
“Kyungsoo?” Junmyeon said gently, knocking softly at the closed door. “I--I’m so sorry…”
Kyungsoo hesitated for a moment then took a deep breath and opened the door. “Uh, it’s okay, I guess?”
Without thinking properly, he leaned forward, put his arms around Junmyeon’s neck, and kissed the other prefect’s mouth. Junmyeon kissed back and put his shaking hands on Kyungsoo’s waist as they backed into the cubicle.
“Peeves wasn’t there,” Myrtle said, emerging from the toilet of the cubicle where they are making out. “Oh.”
Kyungsoo kicked the toilet seat cover shut.
THE NEXT MORNING, Junmyeon woke up, smiling way too widely, remembering last nights events that made his heart flutter. After they kissed, they broke apart awkwardly but just laughed it off, and finished patrol duties with more spring in their steps. Junmyeon would pour all his resources to acquire a Time-Turner, he thought, just to relive that moment with Kyungsoo.
“You look creepy, do you know that?” fellow Slytherin sixth year Kim Minseok said.
“Really?” Junmyeon asked, smiling more widely.
Minseok threw a pillow. “Did something good happen?”
Junmyeon waved his wand to make his bed. “Nothing.”
“Had a good dream?” Minseok persisted.
“The dream came true,” Junmyeon chuckled.
“What?” Minseok said, shooting out of bed to ruffle Junmyeon’s head. “What is it huh?”
Junmyeon knocked Minseok’s hand off. “Nothing!” he insisted. “Know what, let’s head off to breakfast.”
“I swear to you, Junmyeon, if only I could perform Legilimency, I wouldn’t hesitate to use it on you right now.”
The Great Hall was crowded but Junmyeon spotted Kyungsoo easily.
“There you are!” Junmyeon exclaimed, abandoning Minseok at the head of Slytherin table.
“Where are you going!” Minseok demanded.
“See you at Charms!” Junmyeon waved and headed straight to where Kyungsoo is.
However, when he approached Kyungsoo, the latter almost ran off out of the Great Hall, throwing him warning looks.
“Kyungsoo?” Junmyeon said, catching up on the staircases. “Why?”
“Uh,” Kyungsoo said, evidently panicking. “They shouldn’t see us together again--”
“Why?” Junmyeon said incredulously. “What’s wrong?”
Kyungsoo sighed, still nervous. “Are… we… What are we now?”
Junmyeon was surprised at the question. He hadn’t thought of a title all those hours he daydreamed about what happened to them. What are they, really?
“Dating, I suppose?” Junmyeon said cautiously.
Kyungsoo’s lips twitched at the corner. “Right, uh, well… they shouldn’t see us together.”
This took Junmyeon aback. “But why?”
“Th-they might find out?” Kyungsoo said uncertainly. “I mean…”
“So what?” Junmyeon said. “Are you ashamed?”
“Well…”
“Aish, don’t be, okay? It’s okay,” Junmyeon held Kyungsoo’s hand. “Come on. Even Professor Dumbledore was gay. It’s okay.”
Kyungsoo joined him for breakfast and although he still worried a lot about the looks they are getting, Junmyeon tried his best to divert Kyungsoo’s attention. As there was the exams coming up, Junmyeon quizzed Kyungsoo while they ate and thankfully, this helped him relax a little bit.
From two brilliant students fighting to become the next Head Boy from opposing Houses, who unexpectedly got sentenced to a detention which tarnished their perfect student records, they became friends and now here they are. Eventually, Kyungsoo learned to not mind what other people would think or say of him and it made him happier. Junmyeon was happy too.
Epilogue:
SUMMER AFTER THEIR sixth year, Kyungsoo was waiting for Junmyeon in the King’s Cross station. He had set this up as their meeting place since this is the only train that Junmyeon can actually ride and they cannot Apparate yet, being underage. From here, they will just head out to the mall where they will watch movie as promised. The Civil War is showing that day.
“Kyungsoo!”
He turned around and saw Junmyeon running towards him. Thankfully he followed Kyungsoo’s suggestion to ditch the cloak for today.
“Don’t you look handsome!” Kyungsoo said as a greeting and Junmyeon smiled. The latter instantly snaked his arm around Kyungsoo’s waist and rubbed his sides.
“Oh no--Junmyeon!” Kyungsoo reprimanded.
Junmyeon just laughed and squeezed Kyungsoo’s waist. “I missed you!”
Kyungsoo wrapped an arm around Junmyeon’s waist too. “Well, I missed you too!”
Kyungsoo taught Junmyeon how the subway trains are running and how malls work. He also taught Junmyeon how to buy the tickets, telling him how much a Galleon is compared to a British pound.
“These are all very interesting,” Junmyeon said with glee. “Isn’t it so hard to live without magic?”
“No, not at all. You do a lot of work but you get used to it.”
“Can’t wait to see your home.”
“First, we have to watch the movie,” Kyungsoo laughed. They entered the cinema and explained why it was dark inside and how the projector works. “Remember also to keep quiet or you’ll disturb the other moviegoers,” Kyungsoo said. “So if you’ve got a question about anything, just whisper to me.”
The movie began and Junmyeon watched in awe, looking around at the source of the images and pointing out that the painting is moving. “Wow,” he would say every now and then. “What is that!”, he’d ask. Kyungsoo explained patiently. “But please concentrate on the movie,” he chuckled.
Junmyeon leaned forward to his ear to whisper. “Can I kiss you here?”
“What?” Kyungsoo said, scandalized. “It’s inappropriate and disrespectful of the other people here!”
“But I’ve got an invisibility cloak in my bag. We can just cover up.”
“They would wonder where we disappeared to! It’ll be very suspicious. We cannot use magic.”
“Aww. Go on, Soo!” Junmyeon insisted, pecking Kyungsoo’s cheek. “Come on. Just a quick one.”
“No.”
“Please?”
“Still a no.”
Junmyeon playfully tugged at Kyungsoo’s shirt.
“Don’t!”
“Soo~”
He rubbed at Kyungsoo’s leg.
“Aish. No.”
“Wait till we get home,” Kyungsoo winked and that shut Junmyeon up.
When they reached the Do Residence, Kyungsoo introduced Junmyeon to his parents. They knew about him and they’ve got no problem with it. Mrs. Do was very accommodating and Mr. Do cracked every dad joke possible that was corny to Kyungsoo’s ears already but Junmyeon enjoyed a lot. He was literally rolling on the floor, laughing.
After eating lunch, Kyungsoo showed his bedroom to Junmyeon.
“Wow, nice bed,” Junmyeon said, bouncing on the mattress. “What is that?”
“It’s my personal computer,” Kyungsoo said. “Do you want me to open it? We can play games here.”
“What, get inside that tiny box? I’m not sure if we would fit in there, much more play Quidditch…”
Kyungsoo laughed. “No, it’s not like that! Let me show you--”
“Know what, let’s just lie down here. I got sleepy after eating that much,” Junmyeon said. “Come on, lie down with me, Soo.”
Kyungsoo smiled in mischief and prepared to get on the bed when he heard a knock on the window. A Hogwarts owl was there, bearing a letter.
“Hm? What is this? A letter from school?”
Kyungsoo let the owl in and took the letter. “It’s addressed to you… They know you’re here?”
Junmyeon shrugged and took the letter. He opened the envelope and read. He turned pink as he did so.
“Why, what does it say?” Kyungsoo asked.
Junmyeon evidently panicked, breathing heavily. “Oh my god. Merlin’s beard. Ah, it’s nothing!”
He tried to shove off the letter down his pockets but Kyungsoo wrestled him to see it. “What does it say?” he asked loudly, pinning Junmyeon on the bed. “Come on, show me the letter!”
“No! It’s nothing! Just--just notice from the library--”
But Kyungsoo unleashed a hidden strength and managed to wrestle the letter out of Junmyeon’s grip.
Dear Mr. Kim,
We are pleased to inform you that you have been made the new Head Boy--
“Oh my god,” Kyungsoo whispered. He jumped out of bed and pulled his wand from the bedside table. “HOW ABOUT FUCKING NO?” he growled, firing a jinx at Junmyeon.
“Merlin’s baggy pants I AM HEAD BOY! OH YES!” Junmyeon exclaimed even as warts sprouted all over his body after the spell hit him. “HELL YEAH!” he pulled out his wand from the bag and fired red and yellow sparks towards the ceiling of Kyungsoo’s room and even made the lamp shades dance.
Just then, another Hogwarts owl entered through the window and dropped a letter before taking off again. It was a Howler from McGonagall.
“HOW DARE YOU USE MAGIC OUTSIDE SCHOOL, MR. DO AND MR. KIM? I JUST GOT NOTIFIED BY THE MINISTRY FOR MAGIC! HOW EMBARRASSING! FOR THIS, YOU WILL BE PUT IN DETENTION FOR A MONTH AS SOON AS TERM STARTS THIS FALL!”
Both Junmyeon and Kyungsoo stopped and stared at each other. Back to square one. All was fucked up.
